A body of new work following the understory of the rainforest creekbed at the foot of Macquarie Pass NSW on Dharawal land. This area follows on from previous work in ‘Glimmers’, moving from the rushing epic waterfalls to a meandering walk in and out of creek bedded rocks. Light filters through the green understory developing a shift in the language of marks, colour and material.
The creek is not an isolated or static scene, it is part of a complex living system, vulnerable to changes in climate, water flow, habitat and human intervention. Small shifts within such an environment can have consequences that extend far beyond what is immediately visible. I am drawn to the creekbed because these vulnerabilities are tangible, its surfaces carry evidence of both resilience and fragility. Water can appear gentle, yet over time it has the power to transform stone, a landscape can seem enduring while being continually altered beneath our feet.
This body of work comprises watercolour monotypes, stone lithographs and a series of ceramic plates. Since completing a ceramics residency in January 2025 at Burnt Dirt and subsequently working independently as a member of Clay Woll studio, I’ve been gradually developing ceramics skills and works in my practice. As with lithography, ceramics requires a special type of patience and attention to detail, and the challenge of working in 3D forms with different surfaces and glaze materials has in turn influenced my 2D work in ways I could not have imagined. “Suspended in stone” is a series of six Orchid stone lithographs created in response to the history and life of Margaret Flockton who worked at the Botanic Gardens Sydney in the early 1900’s - read more here.
